Students who Waived Hospitalization/Specialty Care Coverage

I waived, now what?

As a degree-seeking student enrolled at least half-time, you still have access to the Yale Health Basic Student Health Services. This is not insurance coverage, just services provided to you paid by your tuition and fees. You can access Student Health, Acute Care, Mental Health & Counseling, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Nutrition Counseling, Inpatient Care, and the Quest Laboratory in our 55 Lock Street facility. You do not need a referral for any of these services except clinician orders for laboratory tests.

You do not have prescription benefits or access to specialists or hospital services unless you choose to pay out of pocket for these services. Yale Health does not take outside insurance, so you will have to access additional care using your alternate insurance. If you would like support figuring out how to use your other insurance, schedule a Student Care meeting with me!

What is a Primary Care Provider?

As a student, your care begins with your Primary Care Provider (PCP) at Student Health. Your PCP is your regular medical professional who sees you regularly and knows you best. You will get routine clinical care, preventative services, and any referrals needed to see specialists from your PCP.

If you are someone who needs gynecological care, you will also be assigned a primary gynecological provider in the Obstetrics & Gynecology department whom you can see regularly. This provider offers preventive care including contraception, and the evaluation and treatment of gynecologic health issues.
