Get out, get moving
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children get 60 minutes of physical activity every day, but it does not have to be done all at once. Breaking it up into small time intervals can make it easier to fit it all in.
There are many opportunities for you to get outside and get active with your friends and family. Whether it’s playing a game of basketball or hiking at a state park, exercising as a family is a great way to stay healthy.
Yale also has many great fitness resources for children and teens.
Find an activity through Yale’s Community Outreach Program, which includes:
- National Youth Sports Program (a free five-week summer program)
- NYPP Basketball League
- New Haven Tennis Outreach
- Squash New Haven (a year-round after school enrichment program)

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than 2 hours of total screen time per day for children. Television viewing is not recommended before 2 years of age.
It is also recommended that children not have television sets in their bedroom, which often leads to too much screen time.
