Current Yale Health Guidance on Measles Vaccinations

Updated as of March 2025

At Yale Health, we prioritize the health and safety of our community by providing up-to-date guidelines on important vaccinations, including the measles vaccine. Measles is a highly contagious viral disease that can lead to serious health complications. Following the recommended vaccination schedule is essential to protect yourself and those around you. We encourage all members of the Yale community to stay informed and ensure they are vaccinated according to the guidelines provided by public health authorities. For detailed information and further resources, please visit the CDC and see additional "Resources" on the right of this section.

In light of recent measles outbreaks, see the following guidance for adults:

Category 1 - No booster needed/considered immune if:

  • Born before 1957
  • History of measles infection as a child
  • Documented 2 doses of MMR vaccine (28 days apart)
  • Positive blood testing (titers) indicating immunity

Category 2 - Measles booster can be obtained (without order) if:

  • Those unsure of their vaccine status were born after 1957. Please look for old records before requesting a booster.
  • Individuals vaccinated between 1957–1968 (when an ineffective inactivated vaccine was used)
  • Travelers to outbreak areas (should be avoided if possible) that have documented immune compromise or unsure of vaccination status

Important Notes:

  • If you fall under category 2 - You may schedule your immunizations in MyChart in the “Schedule and Appointment” tab.
  • A booster dose is safe and highly effective
  • Serology testing is not recommended before boosting

*Those individuals unsure of vaccination status, or do not fit into either category above, or at increased risk due to immune compromise who may travel to increased risk areas, please contact your provider for advice and orders.
