Understanding Yale-Related Healthcare Services and Systems
Yale Health, Yale Medicine, and Yale New Haven Health each play a different role in caring for our community. While they often work closely together, they are separate organizations with distinct purposes. Yale Health provides health coverage and care for its members, Yale Medicine is the clinical practice of Yale School of Medicine physicians, and Yale New Haven Health is the broader health system that includes Yale New Haven Hospital and other hospitals throughout the region.
Yale Health
Health plan and healthcare provider for Yale’s eligible students, faculty, staff, retirees, and dependents. Most care and services are provided at Yale Health Center (55 Lock Street, New Haven).

How We Work Together
Yale Health members may be referred to Yale Medicine specialists or Yale New Haven Health facilities when specialized care, hospital services, or advanced procedures are needed. Together, these organizations help ensure patients receive the right care in the right setting.
Think of it this way: Yale Health is your membership-based health plan and primary source of care; Yale Medicine provides many of the specialists; Yale New Haven Health includes the hospitals and broader healthcare network for services not provided at Yale Health Center.
All students enrolled in a degree-seeking program at least half-time must provide proof of insurance to waive Yale Health Hospitalization & Specialty Care Coverage. Waivers must be completed each academic year.
