Dr. Rachel Lampert is a sports cardiologist and electrophysiologist who specializes in treating athletes with heart conditions, particularly arrhythmias. As the Robert W. Berliner Professor of Internal Medicine (Cardiology) at Yale School of Medicine and director of Yale Medicine’s Sports Cardiology Program, she works with patients of all ages—from university athletes to active individuals—to help them safely stay in the game. Her individualized approach combines diagnosis, treatment, and risk assessment to determine whether and how athletes can continue competing.
Dr. Lampert is known for her groundbreaking research on athletes with implanted defibrillators, challenging long-standing guidelines that discouraged sports participation. She followed over 400 athletes with defibrillators and found no adverse events, leading to a major change in national eligibility guidelines in 2015. Her broader research also explores how stress impacts heart rhythms, and she remains active in leading professional organizations like the Heart Rhythm Society and American Heart Association.
