ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a developmental condition of the brain. It affects a child’s ability to focus and control impulsive behavior. Some children with ADHD have difficulty controlling their activity level. ADHD may also be called attention deficit disorder (ADD).

Children with ADHD often have trouble with the following:

  • Paying attention
  • Sitting still
  • Talking out of turn
  • Being forgetful or losing things
  • Acting without thinking about consequences

There is no cure for ADHD, but the symptoms can be managed. Behavioral therapy is the recommended treatment for preschool-aged children. School-aged children and adolescents may benefit from medication in addition to behavioral therapy.

It is important for parents of children with ADHD to partner with their child’s school. Together parents and teachers can create a plan to maximize learning potential and manage symptoms.

Children taking stimulant medication for ADHD should be seen twice a year by their primary care provider.

Good nutrition, exercise, and sleep habits can help children with ADHD manage their symptoms.
