Our services
The Department of Ophthalmology/Optometry provides:
- Evaluation and management of all eye problems
- Routine eye exams, including prescriptions for glasses (contact lenses are not covered by Yale Health)
- Educational materials
- Resources for students with special visual needs and the blind
Appointments
Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 5:00pm. Please call the department to schedule your appointment at 203-432-0084. We do provide advance booking up to 12 months.
When you need care for an acute problem contact your primary care clinician first; if they are not available, you may be directed to Acute Care. Your provider can contact us immediately for a consultation or appointment.

FAQs
- Are contacts or the contact lens exam covered by Yale Health?
No. These are out-of-pocket costs for the patient. - Can I purchase contacts in a store, or online with my eyeglass prescription?
No. The eyeglass prescription needs to be brought to someone certified to conduct your contact lens fitting. - Are glasses covered by Yale Health?
No. The purchase of glasses is an out-of-pocket cost for the patient. - Are eye exams covered by Yale Health's insurance plan?
Yes, routine eye exams are covered under Yale Health insurance. - I am a student and I waived Yale Health coverage, can I be seen in the Ophthalmology/Optometry Department?
No, waived students are not seen in this department. Students who waived Yale Health coverage need to seek services from providers who accept their insurance. - If I am a student, does my coverage end in May when I finish school?
No, you are covered through July 31st. - I was referred to an outside provider. Can I just keep seeing this person now?
No. When referred out to another provider, you must still come back to Yale Health for follow up care. - What if I have a problem that cannot be managed at Yale Health?
Referrals to Yale Eye Center for problems that cannot be managed at Yale Health require authorization from our Care Coordination Department. The Eye Center will contact the patient directly to schedule appointments.
